1.
I think about you all the time Can’t seem to get you out of my mind I’m out of my mind. You’ve left your mark on every place When I close my eyes, I see your face But I can’t face you. My relentless dead I don’t know how to get you out of my head. My relentless dead All I ever did & all I ever said Lies under you, lies around you. These days I just can’t stay at home I hear your voice whenever I’m alone I feel so alone. They say that time will break your hold Better soon ‘cause this is getting old I’m getting older too.
2.
It may be true what the Prophet said but certainty is for the dead. Everyone's still looking for the light. Perhaps the words that Jesus spoke are not some cruel kind of joke but everyone's still looking for the light. Despite the warning in my song I'm hoping they can't all be wrong even though I cannot tell who's right. Still the light rains down & I'm walking around with my eyes closed. He may come upon me like a thief but I can't help my unbelief. I’m still looking for the light. Even those who've given up still catch the scent from the holy cup; they’re still looking for the light. Still the light rains down, & I'm walking around with my eyes closed. Oh the love rains down, & I’m walking around with my eyes closed. Now I'm bleeding life with every breath; in the middle distance I can see my death. I’m still looking for the light. Sometimes when my heart is breaking the light shines through the cracks it’s making. I’m still looking for the light. As we sweat & bleed & hope & pray that the night will soften into day, we’re still looking for the light. Till we're living in the present tense, stripped of every tired defense, we’re still looking for the light. Still the grace rains down, though the wheel of knowledge hasn't turned. Oh the love rains down, & I'm standing here with my eyes blurred. (Walking around, face upturned, streaming with the light.) (Here am I a-walking round with my face upturned, feel it streaming with light.) I met a man with dusty shoes, he told to me the desperate news: “Lucifer was an angel of the light.” Sometimes in my dreams at night I see him terrible & bright & then I wish the darkness might come, oh come, & swallow up house of rich & house of poor, I want to go & cleanse myself in the ocean that will haunt my sleep with promises that I struggle to keep. So take a moment from my fear, see you stand before me here, but the door is locked & set about with chains of fear & locks of doubt. So I think about you all the time, I just can't get you out of my mind. I know you'd simply take my place, may my wrongs create no trouble in your heart, just remember to hide your face. I love you like a sailor's wife, this harbour's waving you goodbye, I see you in the distance streaming with the light.

So that’s where we were, now here’s where we are, and maybe tomorrow’s better by far; you have to choose, ‘cause you’ve only got me to lose. Every time you talk about your pain you drive me one step nearer insane. Smell the goddamn rose and forget your endless woes just for a second now. Take a moment from your fear, see me standing in front of you here, hope you shouldn’t ignore, just walk through that open door, everything waiting there for you. So that’s where we were, now here’s where we are, and maybe tomorrow’s better by far, you have to choose, ‘cause you’ve only got me to lose. Every single time the way was shown; I can’t do this all on my own. Come out from inner space, feel the sun upon your face and the wind in your hair. Put away your lonely solitude, allow the outside world to intrude. All you’d ever need around you like the air you breathe, everything waiting there for you. So that is the deal, now how do you feel? Does one single word that I’ve said appeal? You have to choose, cause you’ve only got me to lose. Baby, I’ve been standing here so long! How many times can I sing you this song? Take one single step, I can help you with the rest, I can help! So that’s where we were, now here’s where are, and maybe tomorrow’s better by far, you have to choose ‘cause you’ve only got me to lose. So that is the deal, now how do you feel, does one single word that I’ve said appeal? You have to choose ‘cause you’e only got me to lose.

In the middle of my life, I wandered into soundless strife And blundered sharply as a knife Into the Church Of Melancholia. The walls were hung about with sack, The priest wore cloth of deepest black, He strung our souls out on the rack In the Church Of Melancholia. I tried to find me a way out But the doors were locked and set about With chains of fear and locks of doubt. The only thing I knew for sure As the walls closed in across the floor Was that no-one could have loved you more In the Church Of Melancholia. Then I thought I saw you there, Fix me with an empty stare, Return unmoving to your prayer In the Church Of Melancholia. And then I dreampt you called my name, Calling me my self to claim, But when I woke I was still the same! Now sometimes in my dreams at night I see it, terrible and bright And then I wish the darkness might Drown the Church Of Melancholia! I love you though I drown in mud And darkness falls into my blood. You still remain my only good. I long to touch your lovely face And I’m miserable for your embrace, But I know you’d simply take my place In the Church Of Melancholia.

Where are the plans I had yesterday? Where are the lovers that I thought would stay? Have I become another mid-life cliche? Nothing is left here that I recognise. Look in the mirror, make sure of my eyes. Who here is still my friend? Can I begin again, Lose this paralysis, This endless analysis? Here by an ocean that’s haunting my sleep, The bond of a promise that I am struggling to keep. Three am. A restless wind wraps me up In air from the east, Warm humid breath From the mouth of a beast. Hearing the trees at night, Lying high as a kite On pseudo-ephedrine married to Panadeine (™). What are the precepts in which I can trust? How can I tell what is love, what is lust? How can a skeptic make love to his faith When almighty God’s just a vanishing wraith? Is there some principle That is invincible, Or am I lost in a void Without love or cost? Three am. I just want to wrap it up, Get some peace, Put away my thoughts And be released. Still every moment keeps rolling through time, I don’t know what they mean, but I know that they’re mine. I’d rather be terrified, fooled & undignified, Than slipping beneath the fence, Arming in my defence, Faking some confidence, Blind to experience, I’d rather be here than escaping in fear. Three am, 4:29, 5:17, 6:01, sun comes up.

Standing at the window, world of grays and blues, I look out on the ocean, it seems confused. A million tiny whitecaps race the wind and the tide But the deep storm swell will not be denied. Dark wind blowing in the morning light Bends the straight and true. Out to sea on the horizon, One small shaft of sunlight shining through. The sea may come and swallow house of rich and of poor, And all our small devices, they just won’t matter any more. You can stand and argue, you can beg and you can plead. The sea will not regard you, won’t listen to your need. I want to go and cleanse myself In that endless green. Wash away my expectations, Drown my fears like they had never been.

He's a quiet man, But there's plenty going on behind those eyes. He's the kind of guy Who can get things done so there's no surprise. He's the guy who knows that in the rhythm and the flow Is the heart of things And he's learned that the mark of a man Is more than just the shiny things. He's a poet with light and a painter with sound, He’s kind to the kind whether lost or found And there ain’t no better guy to have around Than the quiet man. Quiet man has paid his dues. Quiet man can do what he choose. Quiet man knows how to win or lose. He's the quiet man. He’s a quiet man, But the fire is burning behind those eyes. He's got a scheme for a dream and a first-class team For the long-term prize. But he'll never climb that mountain of fame Across the bodies of his friends, 'Cause he's seen that the means of the mean Can never justify their ends. You know he loves his mum and he loves his dad. He's probably the best friend that you've ever had. By now he's worked out that it's not so bad To be the quiet man. Quiet man drinking grapefruit and blue, Heading down to the cricket with you. Quiet man, frisbees in the park, Lost in a movie right there in the dark. Quiet man walks for miles and miles Lights up the room with his ten-dollar smiles. Quiet man knows what he intends. You can measure a man by the grace of his friends. He’s a quiet man...

Robeson 06:32
Oh they were loathsome! Did you get lonesome? Your wins were beacons to those that saw them. And you, Paul Robeson, you flowed like a river of song. In any language you spoke for freedom. They gave you slave lines, so you just changed them. You never wavered - My God, Paul Robeson, but you were strong! You took your side, you made your choice. There you stood and used your voice. They poured awards upon your head, But not until you were safely dead. You kept laughing instead of crying, You just kept fighting till you were dying. And still, Paul Robeson, your name keeps marching along!

Distance 05:02
I like our talk, Our bodies’ long conversation. I like your smile And your slow determination. I see you in the distance, Can’t tell if you’re coming or going. The hazy sunlight glimmers in my eyes. Gently rocking, Gently following the waves, we spend long nights In the creaking ship of your bed. We pass like ships In the long, long nights of absence, With different charts And conned by different captains. I see you in the distance, Can’t tell if you’re coming or going. The harboured ships are setting out to sea. We live between, Neither one thing nor the other. I’m too cool to be your man, Too warm to be your brother. I’ll be the only man in your life Not looking for a mother. I love you like a sailor’s wife. I hope your boat comes in. Seeing it coming, I’m knowing This hazy harbour is waving you goodbye.

When I am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no sorrow in your breast. Remember me but forget my fate.

WhenI am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no sorrow in your breast Remember me but forget my fate With drooping wings thy cupids come To scatter roses on your tomb

(NB: This song is the narration of a character. Pete Haydon utterly repudiates white supremacy.) As a matter of fact it isn’t all dark; there’s always the stars. And if it’s overcast, the lights of innumerable bars to resist. That struggle even holds a little meaning, however small it seems. Maybe the big light will come one day, maybe it won’t. Sometimes I believe, but mostly I don’t. It doesn’t really matter, the stream carries me along. I could struggle for change But it’s easier to long For something out of reach, For something out of range. Of course I’m white and a man, I’ll always be better than you! We’re small but we own this place, Remember to hide your face. As a matter of fact it isn’t all black; White men are scattered like stars! And when we’re overthrown, or simply outgrown, The lights of innumerable bars Will shine on our whiteness, However small.

about

Over an hour of emotional, complex music, from dense compositions to simple tunes. A journey through existential, relational and ultimately deeply personal states.
Note to The Dark Side: Thankfully the dominance of white men like me is passing away. Some of us embrace the change, others are unwilling or unable to. This song is about those who will be left behind.
